Ironically, they built new "low income" housing. I guess poor people are expendable.

if you go to google maps, there's a street view of this area. it's really surreal to "walk through" this place on street view, how empty it all is, how cracked the streets are, how a low-income housing development is occupied just a stones-throw away to the west. reading all the stories, i cannot even imagine what it must have been like to be there, or even to live at that time, thinking about how my parents would react should something like this happen now, anywhere in the country. and the scary part is that because of how dumping was regulated (or not) a long time ago, it could happen anywhere.

I'm 18 years old, and i've been living in Love Canal since i was about 2. I never knew about the Love Canal tragedy until i was in middle school and learned about it. I have bouts of insomnia and anxiety problems, that i believe may have to do with living around here for so long. I've spent a lot of time around the abandoned streets, playing in the woods and even just walking around the streets. In the woods between Williams Road and the first abandoned street, 101st i believe, there are still corroded 55-gallon drums lying about in clusters. Seriously freaked me out when came upon them. I've hung out over there at night and have seen materialized spirits/ghosts in period dress, just floating about the overgrown fields between the streets. Creepy stuff over here, man. I love the fact that i grew up here, as the whole historical aspect intrigues me; but it comes at a cost i guess. Much love from Love Canal, Niagara Falls, NY. E-Mail me if you have any similar input: nick.gilmer@live.com
