There is an identical nickel mining community at Norilsk in the Russian Federation called Norilsk Nickel and they also smelt nickel at Monchegorsk. They haven't figured out how to build a Superstack, though, so the area is just like Sudbry was in the 1960's and early 1970's. Also MMC Norilsk Nickel doesn't have pollution abatement measures like INCO Vale. Norilsk is one of the most polluted and toxic cities on the planet. Nikel City, Russia, is also quite polluted. Ekibastuz, Kazakhstan (Ekibastuz GRES-2 Power Station) has a super chimney that is taller than the Inco Superstack, so such pollution abatement techniques do exist in the east, but the will to implement is not nearly as tall and stiff as a superstack.

Sudbury is a dump.

Air smells terrible, road systems aren't maintained, restaurants are average at best, shopping is a joke, there is basically one large movie theatre structure supporting 158,000 people, one Starbucks embedded in a Chapters....shall I continue?

New houses are made from a cookie cutter which will not increase in value, renting an apartment is usually a dump (expecially if owned by Zulich Entreprise), one of the nicest and newest buildings for rent is a geared to income building, furthermore; lots of geared to income apartments throughout the city, lots of drinking and driving, drug use...shall I continue?

Seems to have a high level of unemployment / welfare cases, people do not respect other people's property (i.e., vehicle etc.) or are ignorant, high gas prices, lack of competitive pricing for goods and services (i.e., new cars etc.), fashion sense is none existant (track pants, lacking bras, slobs in general), no real city planning or fancy buildings, low life individuals.

Some of these comments, where applicable, DO NOT apply to all individuals. There are some great honest working people in Sudbury.

If you enjoy camping, fishing or hunting which is plentiful in the surrounding areas or want to work in a mine, move on up.

Keep telling yourselves things are better. They may be better than 75-100 years ago and we may need these metals and minerals but your Superstack just disperses the pollution over a greater area. Also take into consideration the amount of energy required to fire those smelters along with everything else. I don't see any solar or wind projects around Copper Cliff. Plain and simple.

In conclusion Sudbury is a deadend dump to me. Good-bye and good luck.

I don't think people are whining. We want our world to improve, this requires communication. Inco makes a great deal of money and should add the preventive measures to decrease the sulphur dioxide and nitrous oxide it deposits into the atmosphere, causing acid rain. This has nothing to do with Sudbury as a city. It is a very nice place. Inco needs to step up.

Hello to all reading this. I am a U.S. resident living in Texas to be exact. I have been reading about the plant in Sudsbury for years now and came upon this posting which has been an enjoyable read!

I have noticed that the residents residing in the beautiful town of Sudsbury defend their heritage quite vigorously, and rightly so. They even seem to defend the placement of the smelting plant in some perverse sense. That is a shame.

This large corporation has come into your lives in that small town of yours and harmed yourself, your elders, and even your future generations. Just because the operating procedures at this plant have improved the quality of life for bio-organisms sharing the same surrounidings does not mean that there is no harm being done today.

Defending this operation seems outrageous at best. It does not matter if your family worked there for years or you are a life-long resident of that small town. The polluted land, lakes, and humans are there which is factual evidence pointing toward wrong doing.

Oh, and another thing.......don't bother with those kids in Africa. I have been to many African countries traveling for work and still cannot release my Lagos, Nigeria trip from my mind. Take a trip there and quickly learn why most inhabitants of this world would not mind a complete annihalation of Northern Africans.
