Spaghetti Junction

It’s strangely beautiful from this height in both expanse and symmetry. Atlanta, GA is known as “Sprawl City” in some circles because of its dependence on the automobile. Of course, huge freeways require enormous structures for turning and interchanging, and that’s where spaghetti junction comes in. Note how there are four areas completely cut off from each other geographically only yet a few hundred meters apart, separated by concrete, speeding metal, and some landscaping.

  • A swedish kind of death

No tunnels or bridges for walkers and bicyclists?

I guess if you build such a road system you want to make sure people use it.

  • I’ve been stuck in traffic there more times than I can imagine. It’s something to see cars and trucks going over you in all kinds of ways while you wait forever for others to go ahead of you.

That ‘s why I moved back to WV

  • [...] I mentally riffled through my usual suggestions, but a girl can only draw so many butterflies, flowers, and babies. My eyes turned to the monstrosity of metal and concrete overhead, and I said, “Spaghetti junction.” [...]

That’s a whole lot of helpful information, and a really nice picture too, but do you know by any chance about how much concrete they used to build it?

I had my first trip through Spaghetti Junction a couple of weeks ago. Thank God it was on a Saturday afternoon, or I’d have probably been sitting in traffic like the rest.
I was merging from 285-E to 85-N, so I got to go over the tallest flyover ramp. Whee! It was quite a view from up there.
Got to go back through it the next day, from 85-S to 285-W. Not as bad, but it was a Sunday morning, so it was doable.
On the whole, I’d rather drive in Nashville during rush hour than navigate ATL traffic again.
That is one more unreal interchange. Wow.
